Jordan's recent tiny rant made me think: what are the costs like for a record label in manufacturing/distributing cds versus making them available for downloading?

I'm sure that certain record labels have better deals than others in this regard, but still do you think there will ever be a time where it becomes that much more cost-effective to have music made available exclusively for download?

I was also thinking about this, and I decided that the mp3s would have to be less than half the cost of the CD for me to prefer the digital files over the physical item.

On a related note, I'd buy a lot more vinyl if the records came with free digital downloads.
